MOOSE
Print this page

Your visit to Kenai is sure to include and encounter with the world's largest member of the deer family, the moose! Moose can be seen year-round along trails and roads, and even in front of the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center!

They can often be seen grazing along:

  • The Kenai River flats
  • Marathon Road
  • Swanson River Road
  • Swan Lake Road
  • Ski Hill Road
Male moose, commonly referred to as bulls, average between 6 ½ to 7 feet tall at the shoulders, and weigh between 1,200- 1,600 pounds, while female moose, called cows, are much smaller in size, weighing in between 800- 1300 pounds. More people hunt moose than any other of Alaska's big game species. Moose hunting season runs August through September. Avid hunters claim the best hunting is in September when the trees are in fall color.
