CARIBOU
Print this page
Caribou, domestically called reindeer, occur
throughout Alaska except for the southeast panhandle and most
offshore islands.
Look for Kenai's two wandering herds along:
- Bridge Access Road
- Kenai Spur Highway
- Marathon Road.
Some interesting Caribou facts:
- Caribou's large concave hooves spread widely
to support the animal in snow and soft tundra
- Caribou are the only member of the deer family
in which both sexes grow antlers
- Newborn calves can walk within an hour and,
after a few days, can outrun a man
- Approximately 500,000 wild caribou live in
Alaska in about 25 distinct herds
