CAPTIAN COOK STATE RECREATION
AREA
Some of the most beautiful campgrounds are located
within a few minutes of the city of Kenai. A short 25-mile drive north
of Kenai, you will find Captain Cook State Recreation Area. This recreation
area named after James Cook, the famous English mariner who discovered
the inlet in 1778, offers a plethora of recreation opportunities. Enjoy
a Fourth of July campout at Discovery Campground, or a family picnic
at Bishop Creek. Anglers will want to cast their lines into Stormy Lake
where rainbow trout and arctic char await. The end of the Swanson River
canoe system is conveniently located in Captain Cook State Recreation
Area just before the river meets the inlet. What better way to end your
canoeing adventure than watching the sun set over Cook Inlet at the
end of the North Road! Captain Cook, as locals call it, is also a favorite
location for berry picking in the summer and cross-country skiing in
the winter.
