  Park Safety

Excursions in Alaska are guaranteed to be fun and exciting, but without the proper precautions, they can also be dangerous. Follow these Alaska State Park guidelines to insure your own safety and to protect Alaska's land and wildlife.

Hypothermia-
Hypothermia can occur year round, even in the summer. To prevent it, follow these guidelines:

  • Dress in layers with wind and water resistant clothing on the outside and "warm when wet" clothing, such as wool or fleece, on the inside. A hat is the most important layer for preventing heat loss.

  • Eat lots of high carbohydrate foods and drink lots of water. Water helps your
    body turn calories into heat.

  • Know the symotoms of hypothermia:
    • Intense shivering
    • Fatigue
    • Stumbling or poor coordination
    • Slurred speech
    • Irrationality

    TO TREAT HYPOTHERMIA:
Remove the victim from wind and weather. Remove wet clothing and replace
with dry clothes. If dry clothes are not available, put the victim in a sleeping bag, and if necessary, put another warm person in the sleeping bag with them. If the victim is alert, give them warm liquids and food. In the case of advanced hypothermia, seek immediate medical attention. Handle the victim gently, as rough handling can cause a heart attack.

Wildlife-
Always be respectful of wildlife and keep your distance. If the animal notices you , you are too close, and in possible danger. Make plenty of noise while hiking and camping to warn animals of your presence. While camping, be sure to store and prepare food at least 200 yards downwind from your tent; so as not to attract bears to your tent site.

Bugs-
Alaskan bugs can be quite pesky during the summer. Make sure to stock up (and use) plenty of repellent.

Drinking Water-
Bring your drinking water with you, or be sure to purify if before you drink. Streams and snow banks can be contaminated by a parasite called Giardia. Giardia can be killed by boiling water for two full minutes or by disinfecting with the proper chemicals.

The wild country of Alaska's parks can be hazardous and unpredictable. Inexperienced travelers are encouraged to take a class on outdoor skills or plan to make their venture with an experienced traveler.
